Isometric versus Elastic Surfboard Interfaces for Locomotion in Virtual Reality

چکیده
Inspired by the “Silver Surfer” cartoons and movies, we designed and developed a surfboard travel interface, which works in either tilt or balance mode. The system supports the comparison of isometric and elastic devices for rate-controlled and position-controlled travel in virtual environments. In this paper, we demonstrate the interface as well as the setup of a complete virtual reality system aimed to evaluate its usability in a future study. We also discuss the device-directed feature of this interface and some potential cognitive overload and confusion incurred by user as were observed in a public demonstration.

Investigation of Feel for 6dof Inputs: Isometric and Elastic Rate Control for Manipulation in 3d Environments
An increasing need exists for both a theoretical basis and practical human factors guidelines for designing and selecting high degree-of-freedom (DOF) computer input devices for 3D interactive environments such as telerobotic and virtual reality systems. This study evaluates elastic versus isometric rate control devices, in a 3D object positioning task. An experiment was conducted with a stereo...
متن کاملTorso Force Feedback Realistically Simulates Slope on Treadmill-Style Locomotion Interfaces
This paper investigates whether torso force feedback on treadmillstyle locomotion interfaces can substitute for treadmill tilt to simulate walking on smooth inclines. The experimental platform is the Sarcos Treadport, whose active mechanical tether can apply horizontal forces to the user to simulate the gravity forces experienced in slope walking. The authors show that users are extremely sensi...
متن کاملCognitive Demands of Semi-Natural Virtual Locomotion
There is currently no fully natural, general-purpose locomotion interface. Instead, interfaces such as gamepads or treadmills are required to explore large virtual environments (VEs). Furthermore, sensory feedback that would normally be used in real-world movement is often restricted in VR due to constraints such as reduced field of view (FOV). Accommodating these limitations with locomotion in...

متن کاملLeaning-Based 360° Interfaces: Investigating Virtual Reality Navigation Interfaces with Leaning-Based-Translation and Full-Rotation
Despite recent advances in high quality Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs), designing locomotion interfaces for Virtual Reality (VR) is still chal‐ lenging, and might contribute to unwanted side effects such as disorientation and motion sickness. To address these issues, we investigated the potentials of leaning-based 360° locomotion interfaces, which provide full-rotational motion cues (unlimited 36...
